Bruce Oldfield

Redefining British Fashion Heritage.

In the annals of British fashion, few names conjure a more vivid picture of elegance, sophistication, and classic couture than that of Bruce Oldfield. Born on 14 July 1950, Oldfield has been an integral figure in British fashion, celebrated for his bespoke occasionwear. Over the years, his illustrious clientele has read like a who's who of international celebrities and royalty, further bolstering his contribution to the British heritage of fashion.

Early Beginnings and Love for Design

Bruce Oldfield's personal journey is an inspirational tale of resilience and a testament to his immense talent. Born into challenging circumstances, he was brought up and educated in the care of Barnardo's, a children's charity. From a young age, he discovered his love for designing and making clothes, inspired by a foster mother who was a seamstress.

Despite these early challenges, Oldfield's burgeoning talent led him to prestigious academic institutions such as Spennymoor Grammar School, Sheffield City College of Education, and finally the famed Ravensbourne College in London. His education culminated with his graduation from St. Martin's School of Art in London in 1973, propelling him into the spotlight of critical acclaim.

Crafting a Stellar Career

The Bruce Oldfield label was launched in 1975, presenting ready-to-wear collections for European and American stores, and it wasn't long before his extraordinary designs drew an esteemed clientele. In 1978, he ventured into couture clothes, producing unique pieces for individual clients. His craftsmanship, paired with his distinctive style, captured the attention of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1980, a relationship that bolstered his international reputation.

In the mid-80s, he opened his first store, a destination for the world's fashion-conscious elite seeking both ready-to-wear and couture designs. Expanding his portfolio, Oldfield also designed shoes for the couture house, Rayne, during the 1980s.

His passion for design was not just limited to high fashion; Oldfield has been known to turn his hand to various sartorial challenges, such as redesigning the McDonald's staff uniform in 2008. He continues to be a sought-after designer for high-profile events and royal occasions. Notably, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, donned a Bruce Oldfield design to the 2011 Royal Wedding, and in 2013, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, wore one of his creations to the inauguration ceremony for King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.

Honours and Legacy

For his indelible contributions to the fashion industry, Oldfield was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1990. His life story and insights into his extraordinary career were laid bare in his 2004 autobiography, 'Rootless'. In addition to his fashion endeavours, Oldfield has dedicated his time and efforts to academia, serving as a Governor of The London Institute and a Trustee of the Royal Academy of Arts.

His impact on the world of fashion has been recognised by several institutions; Oldfield has been awarded Honorary Fellowships from the Royal College of Art and the Universities of Durham and Sheffield. He also received an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law from the University of Northumbria in Newcastle upon Tyne, and another Honorary Doctorate from the University of Central England.

Despite his towering success, Oldfield has never forgotten his humble beginnings, serving as a Vice-President of Barnardo's, the very organization that cared for him during his early years. This blend of fashion prowess and public service makes Bruce Oldfield a unique figure in the British fashion scene.

Today, Bruce Oldfield's legacy lives on in his brand, with couture, bridal, and custom-made attire, along with a full range of accessories, available at his establishments in Beauchamp Place, London. As a testament to his contributions, Oldfield's work continues to redefine British fashion heritage, and his style is set to inspire future generations of designers, fashion enthusiasts, and style icons.

In the world of British fashion, Bruce Oldfield has secured his place as a beacon of sophistication and enduring style, seamlessly blending the traditional with the contemporary, and leaving an indelible mark on the country's sartorial heritage.
