Glenlivet - No 2 Brand of Malt Whisky Worldwide

The Spirit of Scottish Heritage.

Among the verdant valleys and glistening streams of Moray, Scotland, the legacy of Glenlivet comes alive. For centuries, this historical brand has been an embodiment of Scottish culture and heritage, weaving tales of tradition, resilience, and craftsmanship into each bottle of its single malt Scotch whisky. The Glenlivet Distillery, the oldest legal distillery in the Glenlivet parish, is a testament to Scotland's enduring love affair with whisky and an iconic contributor to the British heritage. Its journey from an illicit distillery in the 1700s to the world's second-largest single malt brand is a tale of vision, ambition, and tenacity.

The Distillery and the Whisky

Founded in 1824, the Glenlivet Distillery is nestled near Ballindalloch in Moray, Scotland. Throughout its almost uninterrupted operation since its inception, it has only closed once during World War II and survived the Great Depression, exemplifying the resilience of the brand. Today, the distillery is a significant part of the whisky landscape, owned by the French alcoholic beverages company Pernod Ricard.

Harnessing the abundant natural resources of the region, the distillery draws water from Josie's Well and other nearby springs. The malt is procured from Crisp Maltings in Portgordon. The design of Glenlivet's stills, lantern-shaped with long, narrow necks, aids in the production of its light-tasting spirit. These elements come together within the distillery's seven wash stills and seven spirit stills, and the spirit is then matured in oak casks, cultivating the unique flavour of Glenlivet whiskies.

The distillery's current production capacity is a robust 5,900,000 proof litres per annum, with the majority sold as The Glenlivet single malt. The remaining quantity is utilized in Pernod Ricard's blended whisky brands. The main product range from the distillery is The Glenlivet range of single malt Scotch whisky, although whisky from the distillery is also featured in other Pernod Ricard brands such as Chivas Regal and Royal Salute.

The Evolution of Glenlivet

The legacy of Glenlivet began with the passing of the Excise Act in 1823, which allowed for the establishment of legal distilleries. George Smith, operating an illicit distillery at the time, became the first person in Scotland to apply for and receive a license to legally produce spirit. His bold decision, supported by Alexander Gordon, the 4th Duke of Gordon, marked the birth of the Glenlivet Distillery in 1824 at Upper Drumin.

By the mid-1800s, the rising demand for Glenlivet whisky led to the establishment of a larger distillery at Minmore. This consolidation allowed for more efficient operation and, in 1859, led to the formation of the legal entity George & J.G. Smith, Ltd.

Despite competition and imitations, Glenlivet continued to thrive, asserting its right to the name "Glenlivet" through legal action. The ruling permitted other distilleries to hyphenate their distillery name with the "Glenlivet" name, leading to names like The Glen Moray-Glenlivet Distillery.

Throughout the 20th century, the distillery saw a series of mergers and acquisitions, eventually becoming part of the Pernod Ricard portfolio in 2000. Despite these changes, the spirit of Glenlivet remained intact, with the brand continuing to be the best-selling malt whisky in the United States and the fourth best-selling in the UK.

Legacy and Influence

Today, the Glenlivet Distillery serves as an essential stop on Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail, inviting visitors to sample three of its products after a guided tour. It stands as a testament to the historical and cultural significance of whisky to the British heritage.

In 2010, Prince of Wales inaugurated a new extension to the distillery, featuring an additional mashtun, eight washbacks, and six stills, thereby increasing the capacity by 75%. This expansion illustrates the brand's commitment to preserving tradition while embracing growth and innovation.

Over the years, Glenlivet whiskies have been recognized and lauded at various spirit ratings competitions. Their 18-year offering is particularly notable, earning five double golds from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition between 2005 and 2012.

In essence, Glenlivet is not just a whisky brand. It's a chronicle of Scotland's history, a testament to the nation's perseverance, and a celebration of its artistry in whisky-making. Its contribution to British heritage goes beyond business success; it is a story of tradition and innovation intertwined, a legacy that continues to unfold with each passing year. The Glenlivet Distillery and its single malt Scotch whisky are a timeless homage to Scotland's cultural richness and a vital thread in the tapestry of British heritage.
