Colin Montgomerie

An Exemplar of British Golf Heritage.

There are few individuals who have made as significant an impact on the British sporting heritage as Colin Stuart Montgomerie, OBE. As a seasoned professional golfer, his contributions to the world of golf have been monumental. The footprints he has left on the fairways, not just in Britain but globally, are indelible. Beyond his personal achievements, Montgomerie's legacy also lies in the way he has represented the spirit and ethos of the sport, becoming an embodiment of British golfing heritage.

A Sterling Career on the Greens

Born on 23 June 1963, Montgomerie emerged from Scotland, a land that cradles the birthplace of golf, to dominate European golf in an unparalleled fashion. During his professional career, Montgomerie secured a record-breaking eight European Tour Order of Merit titles, seven of which he won consecutively from 1993 to 1999. His tally of 31 European Tour victories is the highest by any British player, placing him fourth on the all-time list of golfers with most European Tour victories.

The prime years of his professional career were marked by a striking winning streak in the Volvo PGA Championships, where he emerged as the champion three consecutive times from 1998 to 2000. Montgomerie's mastery of the sport was further acknowledged globally when he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2013.

His prowess transcended age when he joined the Champions Tour in June 2013, after his 50th birthday. Montgomerie wasted no time in making his mark in senior golf. He won his first senior major championship at the Senior PGA Championship in 2014, which he successfully defended the following year. Altogether, he secured six wins on the senior circuit by 2017, establishing himself as a timeless force in the sport.

The Formative Years

Born in Scotland and raised in Yorkshire, England, Montgomerie's passion for golf was nurtured from a young age. His father, James Montgomerie, who served as the Managing Director of Fox's Biscuits, was an influential figure in shaping his early golfing years. Montgomerie spent a significant part of his childhood at the Ilkley Golf Club, where he learned the nuances of the game under the guidance of past professional Bill Ferguson.

Montgomerie's education was well-rounded, with stints at Leeds Grammar School and Strathallan School in Perthshire. During his time in Leeds, he became a supporter of Leeds United. His golfing ties with Scotland remained strong, as his father later became the secretary of Royal Troon Golf Club, one of the country's most prestigious golf clubs.

From Amateur to Pro

The young Montgomerie was one of the first British golfers to venture to a U.S. college, enrolling at Houston Baptist University. There, he honed his golfing skills and emerged as the university team's top player. This period of his life set the stage for his journey to the pinnacle of professional golf.

Before turning professional, Montgomerie had an illustrious amateur career, winning three significant Scottish amateur tournaments. He also represented Great Britain and Ireland in prestigious international amateur competitions, twice in the Eisenhower Trophy (1984 and 1986) and twice in the Walker Cup (1985 and 1987). His talent also shone in the Scottish team that clinched the 1985 European Amateur Team Championship in Sweden.

The decision to turn professional was a turning point in Montgomerie's life. Although he considered a career in sports management, leveraging his degree in business management and law, a golf outing convinced him that his true calling lay in the greens and fairways of golf.

Unmatched Dominance

Montgomerie's transition into the professional golfing world was seamless. He turned professional before the 1988 season and was named the Rookie of the Year on the European Tour that year. His rise was meteoric; his first victory came at the 1989 Portuguese Open TPC, where he triumphed by 11 shots. His second win soon followed, coming at the 1991 Scandinavian Masters in Sweden, where he outplayed a field of world-class competitors.

His consistency and dominance were most evident when he secured the top spot on the European Tour Order of Merit for seven consecutive years, from 1993 to 1999. Despite this success, Montgomerie faced struggles, both on and off the golf course, leading to a slump in his rankings in the new millennium. However, the Scottish golfer's tenacity and resilience brought him back stronger than ever. In 2005, he won his eighth European Tour Order of Merit and returned to the world's top ten.

Trials in the Majors

Despite his abundant success, one accomplishment has eluded Montgomerie: winning a major championship. He has finished runner-up five times, but a major title remains absent from his decorated career. His pursuit of this elusive title has seen him compete toe-to-toe with some of golf's greatest, including
